Retirement Cuts

You recently received notice from UF’s HR office that the employer contribution to ORP retirement plans will be reduced by 2.28 percentage points, approximately a 30% cut. If you are in ORP, this will cost you many thousands of dollars in retirement benefits. Some have asked whether the court ruling last spring in favor of the law suit brought by FEA bears on this matter. Regrettably, the answer is that it does not. That law suit concerns only the mandatory employee contribution and has been appealed by the state, with the Florida Supreme Court set to hear arguments in early September. Unfortunately, FEA’s attorneys do not see the possibility of a successful legal challenge to the employer cut.
