Statements of the candidates for Chapter President
Statement by William Keegan
I am a 20-year member serving as co-Chief Negotiator in the ongoing (1 ½ years) contract bargaining. The collective bargaining agreement is the minimum. I plan to push UF to address issues that do not require bargaining e.g. salary equity, administrative overload (estimated as 40% of faculty’s time), non-tenure-track (Clinical, Research, & Teaching) issues, UF funding for P.K. Yonge, communication and enhanced child-care opportunities. We also need to recruit department reps, and develop a system for holding administrators accountable even when their offenses do not rise to the level of grievance. We are the University.
Statement by Paul Ortiz
After I arrived at the University of Florida in 2008, I began making office visits to encourage faculty in order to join UFF-UF. I am UFF-UF’s delegate to the Central Labor Council. I have served our union in a variety of other capacities including vice-president, chair of the membership committee as well as first vice-president. I am chair of Government Relations for UFF-UF. My goals as president will be to grow our membership, organize coalitions with community-based organizations, as well as to promote awareness of the importance of unionism among faculty, staff and students in the challenging years to come.
