Aug. 15, 2024 UPDATE

We continue to fight attacks on our rights through the legal system. More specifically, UFF-UF has filed two new lawsuits: the first one, in which UFF-UF is a plaintiff, was filed in federal court and challenges SB266 arbitration ban from 2023; the second one, filed in state court, challenges SB 266’s requirement for post-tenure review.

In addition, there are at least three ongoing unfair labor practice (ULP) complaints against the BoT related to post-tenure-review (PTR), and at least one district court appeal of a PERC ruling on a previous ULP related to PTR. Furthermore, your union and BoT are at impasse on PTR, with the BoT insisting on waivers to impasse, another ULP.

Meanwhile, your grievance team is hard at work defending the rights of 25 UF faculty, including many who were adversely affected by PTR. Please step up to train with the grievance team. Contact us at uff-uf-grievances@googlegroups.com to learn more about these opportunities.

JUL. 10, 2024 UPDATE

On July 10, after the Provost’s PTR evaluations were released, UFF-UF hosted a second emergency meeting to discuss the path forward for faculty adversely affected by the University’s unilateral imposition of PTR before resolution of Impasse, which was declared by UF. Check out the slide deck from that meeting, as well as the Zoom recording.  This year, 136 tenured faculty members in the bargaining unit were called up for PTR; 4 have received a letter of proposed termination, 20 were told they “did not meet expectations” and could be potentially terminated in 1 year after being subjected to a “performance improvement plan”, and 10 announced their resignation rather than go through the ignominy of PTR. In contrast, every faculty member who went through PTR at FSU either “met or exceeded expectations.”  Through this egregious treatment of faculty, UF’s administration can proudly report to the BoG, the legislature and the governor that it has achieved the end of tenure at UF.

In the meantime, UFF-UF has received reports that some UF administrators are aligning their units’ annual evaluation criteria with the unilaterally-imposed PTR criteria that are currently under impasse. This practice is a violation of Article 18 and Article 9 of the CBA which, regardless of the outcome of PTR impasse, will continue to govern faculty annual evaluation.

If you know of instances in which UF administrators have used or have announced an intention to use  PTR criteria as part of the annual evaluation process, please report these violations to your union at uff-uf-grievances@googlegroups.com

Below, please find some informational resources related to post-tenure review (PTR). These resources should be useful whether you’re in the midst of the PTR process or expect to go through this process in the years to come. And be sure to check this page periodically for new resources!

These resources include:

  • UFF-UF’s brand new PTR Information and Advice pamphlet: This pamphlet provides information on a variety of PTR-related topics, including an overview of the PTR process’s timeline and components, as well as information on how your union can support you throughout this process.
  • The recordings of UFF-UF’s 13 May and 10 July PTR information sessions: At these meetings, UFF-UF President Meera Sitharam provided guidance on how faculty should respond to their dean’s assessment letter and document evidence related to the PTR rollout. In addition to the session recordings, please also review this slide deck from the May 13th meeting, as well as the deck from the July 10th meeting, both of which contain a summary of the initial informational sessions, the Q&As that followed, and several useful linked documents.
  • Our archive of chapter newsletters: These newsletters provide detailed information on the progress of PTR-related bargaining, the ongoing impasse process, and UFF’s efforts, at both the statewide and chapter levels, to support faculty and fight back against this attack on tenure and academic freedom.

In addition to sharing information, your union is also eager to support you more directly as you either navigate or plan for the PTR process.

If you’d like to set up a one-on-one consultation with the union regarding PTR, please contact uff-uf-membership@googlegroups.com. Based on the nature of your inquiry, the UFF-UF Membership Team will connect you to the appropriate resources. This offer is open to both members and non-members alike.
